For many years, the main treatments for cancer were surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. While these methods remain important, they often come with major limitations, including damage to healthy cells and difficult side effects. In recent years, however, a newer form of treatment called immunotherapy has begun to change the way doctors fight cancer. Rather than attacking cancer directly, immunotherapy helps the body‘s own immune system recognize and destroy cancer cells. This approach has transformed cancer treatment for some patients and represents one of the most promising advances in modern medicine.
The immune system’s job is to protect the body from harmful invaders such as bacteria, viruses, and abnormal cells. In theory, it should also be able to detect and destroy cancer cells. However, cancer is able to survive by using strategies that help it hide from the immune system or weaken the body‘s immune response. Some cancer cells produce signals that essentially tell immune cells not to attack. Immunotherapy works by blocking these signals or by strengthening the immune system so it can better identify cancer as a threat.
One major type of immunotherapy is called checkpoint inhibitor therapy. Checkpoints are natural “off switches” in the immune system that prevent it from attacking healthy cells. Some cancers take advantage of these checkpoints to avoid being destroyed. Checkpoint inhibitor drugs block this process, allowing immune cells to recognize and attack the tumor. These treatments have shown especially strong results in cancers such as melanoma, lung cancer, and kidney cancer. For some patients with advanced cancer, immunotherapy has helped shrink tumors and significantly extend survival.
Another important form of immunotherapy is CAR T-cell therapy, which is a highly personalized treatment. In this method, a patient’s T cells, a type of immune cell, are removed from the body and genetically modified in a laboratory so they can better recognize cancer cells. The altered cells are then returned to the patient, where they can seek out and attack the cancer more effectively. CAR T-cell therapy has shown remarkable success in certain blood cancers, including some forms of leukemia and lymphoma, especially in patients whose cancer did not respond to other treatments.
Immunotherapy is changing cancer treatment because it offers something traditional treatments often cannot: a more targeted way to fight disease. Instead of attacking all rapidly dividing cells like chemotherapy, immunotherapy focuses on helping the immune system respond specifically to cancer. This can lead to longer-lasting effects, and in some cases, the immune system may continue to recognize and fight cancer even after treatment ends.
Despite its promise, immunotherapy is not a cure for every patient or every type of cancer. Some people do not respond to it at all, and others may develop serious side effects when the immune system becomes overactive and attacks healthy tissue. Researchers are still working to understand why immunotherapy works well for some cancers but not others.
