Today, the suit is the most familiar formal attire, but its history in Korea spans only about 140 years. Western-style clothing was first introduced to Korea in the 17th century when Hendrick Hamel and his crew drifted ashore on Jeju Island. It was later officially introduced during the opening of Korean ports through the uniforms of Western diplomats and soldiers.

The suit became official attire when Emperor Gojong of the Korean Empire proclaimed the “Munmu Bok” (Civil and Military Uniform) Decree. Along with the Short Hair Ordinance, the adoption of Western clothing brought significant changes to Korea’s traditional dress culture.In recognition of this historical significance, the Korea Custom Tailors Association has designated January 13 every year as “Suit Day.”

Korean bespoke tailoring techniques are recognized worldwide. They have proven their excellence by winning multiple gold medals at the WorldSkills International competitions. Even today, the delicate cutting and sewing skills of Korean master tailors receive high acclaim globally.
